Red Clover Infusion (Tea)

I want to share with you how RED CLOVER (Trifolium pratense) can help women and estrogen.

Yes, this common plant we all try to get rid of in our gardens. This weed can be serious medicine.

One fascinating fact about red clover is that it can be an estrogenic adaptogen – by either increasing or decreasing estrogen levels, depending on what your body may need.

Red clover contains phytoestrogens – naturally occurring estrogens (isoflavones, coumestrol, a phytoestrogen, more potent than genistein found in soy or kudzu) – which would benefit women in peri- or menopause who suffer because of dropping estrogen levels and symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and insomnia.

Yet, red clover has also shown to inhibit binding of estradiol (stronger estrogen) – making it anti-estrogenic. This means that women who suffer from symptoms of estrogen dominance will benefit from red clover as well.

Furthermore, red clover is also antioxidant, antitumoral, antispasmodic, expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and wound healing (when applied topically, best in balms).

How to use red clover?

The best way to use it is in the form of a tea (infusion) or tincture.

  1. Hello,
I had been seed cycling for about 3 months when i introdced a healthy menstrual cycle tea (containing raspberry, licorice, netttle, dandelion) and a red clover tea daily. After two weeks of the teas, i developed pain in my breasts, similar to having mastitis. I stopped everything and in about a week the pain subsided. Do you think the red clover or other herbs could have caused an imbalance with my hormones (too much estrogen) causing the pain?

    • Hi Jessie,

It is possible that you have an adverse reaction to one of the herbs that you were taking. Best to back off and work on supporting your gut, liver and sugar balance, which will ultimately help your estrogen metabolism as well.

  2. Can red clover tea help with young women who have severe low estrogen, low progesterone, and high levels of testosterone and androgens???

I’m 21 years old and despite doctors testing my hormone’s and saying they’re in the ‘normal’ range, I suffer from severe hirsutism, chin, upper lip, neck, jawline hair, chronic frontal balding/thinning, chronic acne for 11 years since puberty, and my jawline and chin has grown nuch bigger. I look like a mtf or ftm transition and I don’t look like a healthy fertile young woman. My breast size has decreased, I have no hips, or curvature to my body, and my skin is very greasy and oily yet extremely thick. My skin isn’t plump, supple, or hydrated. I have all the physical manifestations of a hormonal imbalance but my doctors are refusing to intervene because my blood tests are ‘normal’.

I’ve been to 9 different doctors and the only solution they have is birth control and anti androgen drugs but they’re all temporary fixes. They don’t actually permanently fix the underlying problem which is high testosterone and low estrogen. Many different OBGYN’s and endocrinologist have told me they’re only familiar with menopause for older women but not younger womens hormonal imbalance issues.

  3. Thank you for this.
If I purchase organic Red Clover tea, what is the translation between 1 tea bag (Traditional Medicinals Organic Red Clover tea) and this method?

    • Hey Mary,

I am unsure how much of dried pure red clover that Traditional Medicinals uses in the tea you mentioned, so I am unable to offer you a translation.

In this recipe, we use loose leaf pure organic red clover to make an infusion. If you are looking for a source for Red Clover, you can look for local options like apothecaries or natural food stores. We also offer a link in the recipe above to purchase online.

      Healthy regards,
      HB Team

  4. Hello,

I have been harvesting a bunch of red clover blossoms from my garden and while I have been drying some, I am wondering if I could also make a long infusing using the fresh blossoms?

    thank you

  5. Hi the link to Amazon for the kind of red clovers you buy is broken. Could you please say which brand you recommend . Many thanks Rosa

  6. Can you provide the link to the study regarding red clover’s ability to inhibit estrogen surges? I am trying to learn whether this is the best herb for me as I have spikes and drops (perimeno time for me). Thanks,

  7. Could you please provide similar instructions for using red clover as a tincture? Now postmenopausal, I expect rely on it the rest of my life & the tea recipe calls for a larger amount of loose herb than I can probably buy on an ongoing basis. Thank you so much!!!!
