What hormonal imbalance do most women have but don’t have any idea they have it? Estrogen Dominance is one of the most common hormonal imbalances that the women I work with experience.

Where Causes Estrogen Dominance?

Estrogen Dominance can cause all kinds of hormone symptoms including breast or ovarian fibroids, varicose veins, heavy menstrual bleeding, body fat and cellulite, fluid retention, PMS, and anxiety. It can also help trigger or worsen conditions such as endometriosis. Estrogen Dominance can be caused by many lifestyle factors including stress, poor diet, some meds, inadequate liver function and exposure to an estrogenic cocktail of chemicals from skincare products, cleaners, packaging, and food.

These can trigger:

  1. Excess levels of the strong estrogens: Estrone (E1) and estradiol (E2), as compared to estriol (E3), which is the “protective estrogen.”
  2. Low progesterone: The ratio of progesterone to E2 is too low because estrogen becomes too dominant and also because many women don’t produce enough progesterone due to issues such as stress.

Which Herbs Can Help with Estrogen Dominance Problems?

Nature offers powerful remedies to help restore the hormonal balance between estrogen and progesterone. Here’s a snapshot of common estrogen dominance problems, along with the herbs and plant foods that can help women:

Fibroids, Breast Lumps, and Breast Cancer

Long-term, excess estrogen can increase the risk of developing estrogen-positive breast cancers. Herbs and plant foods that help liver function also encourage a balance between estrogen and progesterone. They can also relieve other signs and symptoms of Estrogen Dominance including breast tenderness and benign lumps (which could turn cancerous). Good choices include:

Chaste tree

Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) also known as Monk’s Pepper got these names from the anti aphrodisiac qualities of the plant. Monks used to chew the berries and leaves of this plant to reduce urges. When used in large quantities some may experience reduced libido. Chaste tree works by increasing luteinizing hormone which helps to raise progesterone levels so that estrogen levels are not so dominant. It can help reduce issues such as painful, lumpy breasts, bloating, depression, headache, and constipation.


Passionflower is high in chrysin, a naturally occurring flavonoid that is found in plants like passionflower and chamomile and may help lower estradiol. It is a great plant ally for perimenopausal sleep disturbance because it helps lower estradiol and has calming, mild sedative qualities.

Raspberry Leaf

Enjoy this in tea form and benefit from its rich levels of an antioxidant called ellagic acid. Raspberry leaf can alter estrogen metabolism, helping to reduce the risk of hormonal cancers caused by 17beta-estradiol, shows research in animals from the University of Louisville.


Like licorice and ginseng, maca root is an “herbal adaptogen”. This means it will adapt to your body’s needs, helping to naturally balance your hormones. Research at Charles Sturt University in Australia has shown benefits for women taking 500mg capsules off Lepidium Peruvianum Chacon Maca twice a day. Over four months these women experienced an increase in progesterone – which is often too low for women suffering from Estrogen Dominance.

Broccoli and Broccoli Sprouts

According to some research, Broccoli helps inhibit breast cancer stem cells, preventing new tumors from growing because it contains a compound called sulforaphane.

These herbs can be used in easy to make salves, tinctures, and infusions.

Poor Liver Function

When excess estrogen is constantly circulating in your body, the liver can become overloaded, rendering it unable to filter out harmful estrogen metabolites (which are easily excreted when the liver is functioning optimally). This can then lead to even circulating levels of estrogen.

Milk Thistle

Assists the liver to remove excess estrogen and can also help reduce high cholesterol levels.


Boosts the production of bile, which in turn, supports liver function to eliminate excess estrogens.

Dandelion root and leaf

This bitter plant stimulates bile production which facilities your liver’s detoxification process, helping it to break down estrogen and progesterone byproducts and remove them from the body normally through excretion.

Cruciferous vegetables

Another research study shows that foods like broccoli, kale, arugula, and cauliflower contain glucosinolates, which also activate a phase 2 detoxification in the liver. These powerhouse veggies filter estrogen metabolites from your body. If you have thyroid issues, cooking your cruciferous vegetables helps reduce ~ 80% of their goitrogenic chemicals. Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Does your menstrual cycle sometimes make you feel like you’re riding a hormonal roller coaster? Many women experience mood swings, fluid retention, and breast tenderness in the days or weeks leading up to your period. These fun symptoms can be painfully exacerbated by Estrogen Dominance.


Seed cycling can be used to reduce symptoms of Estrogen Dominance. Seeds can also increase your levels of nutrients, including zinc and vitamin E. You simply add two tablespoons of one seed or one tablespoon each of two different seeds to smoothies, salads or soups. You will need to experiment to work out what best suits your body and hormonal profile.

Natural Remedies for Estrogen Dominance

As a general rule to boost estrogen, the following seeds are favored during days 1-14 of the menstrual cycle:

  • Flaxseeds

  1. would these still apply if I had complete hysterectomy? Ever since, I’ve had cellulite and fatty tissue. I used to have muscle and tone. I am Now Hypothyroid.

  2. i tried the seed cycling and my face breakout like crazy (never even get to the second phase of the seed cycling) also tried the vitex since i have low progesterone and for what i read i had high hopes for it but, again, my chin started to breakout like crazy!! dont know what to do anymore since i eat healthy, i do acunpunture, exercise, take prenatals, zinc and probiotics…

      I’m sorry to hear that the seed rotation is not working for you. The skin is a detox mechanism for the body. Perhaps you should do a detox and begin the seed rotation again.

    • My chin broke out using chaste berry. I no longer have that problem but here’s what I do and don’t do. I cut gluten dairy and sugar from my diet. I allow a small portion of dairy everyday. Heavy on veggies, fruit, all types of ferments, and sprouts. I take a mushroom blend in powder form maca ashwaganda, ginseng, turmeric, and a variety of other heavy hitters. I think I’m finally figuring out my body’s needs so don’t give up! You will get there!

  4. Could you post more about the effects of taking fenugreek and fennel regularly? I am looking at starting to take the two for a period of time to increase breast size and general breast health but have not been able to find much information on the topic that is reliable. As you can imagine I am reluctant to start taking something I fear might have a correlation with risks of developing estrogen dependent cancers. Would love to get feedback on this as I’m sure many readers would as well.

  5. Hi. I am 59, 5 ft tall, post menopausal. I have enormous sized breasts compared to the rest of my body like arms and hands.Though I have some weight gain, in past 15 years about 22 pounds, even when I tried to miss meals for about 10 days, it didn’t make much difference to them. I also sleep very little. I am vegetarian, but have milk, yoghurt and some cheese. No eggs yet.. I have also lot of hair fall. I have hardly any body hair, none under armpits.
    Please suggest some remedy, the more natural the better.

  6. Hi Angela, I’m 40 yrs old and unfortunately I’m in menopause. My weigh is normal but since I’ve experienced the signs of early menopause till now my body had 2 visible changes: my breasts have shrink so much that I can barely see them, I look like a child, and very often I have big bloating even if I haven’t eat anything that can cause bloating. My doctor prescribed me estradiol and for about two years now I’m taking “Angelique” every day. That has helped me a lot with my hot flashes, insomnia, mood swings but I see other changes like increase in cellulite and changes in my hair like more thinning and also a decreased sex drive (unfortunately my menupause came in full package :(). My question is what kind of herbs do you sugest for my case? I drink fennel and black tea every day, I exercise 4 times a week and I try to eat very healthy every day. Thnx in advance

      I also suffer from poly-cystic ovaries. Last year I learned about Inositol. It is a nutrient that is similar to B vitamins and is necessary for production of all neurotransmitters and for regulating hormones.. Most people can produce enough of it in their own bodies, but supplementing with it has been clinically proven to help PCOS (as we call it in the US). I buy myo-inositol on Amazon and put one teaspoon, or approximately one gram, in my coffee every morning. It tastes slightly sweet. The scientific study suggests a dose of 3 grams per day, so I will adjust my dose if I need to. I also buy D-chiro inositol on Amazon and take one capsule a day. So far, I have had regular periods for the last 8 months, and PMS has gradually become less bothersome starting five months ago – it took a couple of months for PMS to begin to improve, but what a difference! I am in my mid-forties and have never had regular periods before this. My husband and I had a very difficult time conceiving. I wish someone had told me about this when I was in my twenties!! It would have saved me a lot of grief, and probably a lot of unnecessary weight!

  8. I am really stumped because I appear to have so many of the symptoms associated with low progesterone that I keep reading about but I do not have heavy or prolonged bleeding during menstruation. My periods have lasted only one to two days for many years now. I have an expelling of dark blood a couple of days before my period begins. Do you think taking Agnus Castus would be a good or bad course of action for me with that in mind? I’m afraid that upping my progesterone may potentially cause only more problems and I’m at a loss.

    • Hi Roxy, NO MATTER what hormonal imbalance you might have, restoring the health of the gut, liver and sugar level are the FOUNDATION of hormonal balance. If you focus on these first, you very likely will experience higher progesterone production as well. Focusing on progesterone-promoting foods while experiencing digestive issues, sugar ups-and-downs and a toxic liver will be fruitless.

    • Michelle – the use of Shepard’s purse can be used to slow or stop your period. Look it up online for dosing information. Do not use if you have had a stroke or clotting disorder.

Now I came across this article and want to know which of these herbs I can take since I think I have too much estrogen in my body.   10. Hello 😊 I wish you can give me an advise. Can’t sleep.and I wake up during the night with this horrible sensation like I have my head and arms inside an oven so I uncover then 5 minutes later and cold and then hot again.
    I’m 48 and my last 3 periods were on oct 19 , November 8 and December 9.
    my lab test results at “ life extension “ were estrogen dominant = estradiol 218.5
    low progesterone 4.1 and low testosterone was minus 3.
    They suggested me to take 5 mg of dhea and 25 mg of progesterone cream . Also they said that I should stop taking the fenugreek suplement that I was taking at the moment for natural breast enhancement .
    After 6 months of following their directions I did the test again an my testosterone was a little bit better = 13 but my progesterone drops even more= 0.6 and the estradiol was higher = 242.4. so the doctor told me that I need to start using Bioidentical hormones and at least 200 mg of progesterone a day and I can’t afford that.
    My questiona are :if I start cycling with the seeds do I need to stop the 25 mg of progesterone cream and the dhea pills ? What is your opinion about the fenugreek supplements when you are estrogen dominant ?

  12. I am ED and have extreme pain and blood clots during menstruation. If I take herbs or seeds with phytoestrogens I will start cramping and bleeding twice a month rather than once.

    Herbs like dandelion root, milk thistle, and maca have phytoestrogens. I am running out of things I CAN consume for relief that wont actually give me more pain.

    So far all I’ve found is nettle leaf and Holy Basil. Holy Basil has been a God-send, but i have to take it all month long to hope for a normal period.

    Because of this, i really dont think seed cycling works. Why give phytoestrogenic seeds to someone already estrogen dominant? It just causes more dominance. I’ve found whole message boards filled with women who were put in extreme pain by taking maca between cycles because they are ED and maca contains phytoestrogens.

Can you advise – I am under the impression that raspberry leaf and milk thistle have contraindications for endometriosis because they promote oestrogen -yet your post recommends them for oestrogen dominance? Notably, you cite an animal study, but I would be interested to know your thoughts on this?

      The HB herbalist says “Herbs are complex and raspberry leaf and milk thistle have properties that may help relieve endometriosis. They also have phytoestrogens properties that act like estrogen and fill those receptors. These plants may help those that need those receptors filled to enhance estrogenic function or help to block too much estrogen getting in.

      Unlike pharmaceutical estrogens, the phytoestrogens in food and herbs do not appear to increase the risk of endometrial cancer. Herbs are adaptogenic and have numerous properties that may help conditions in ways we don’t understand yet.   14. Is it ok to take liquorice tablets and ashgawandha powder as well as oestrogen-only hrt (estradiol)? I find that the liquorice helps with digestive issues whilst the asgawandha helps with anxiety – But my doctor has told me that the liquorice will lower oestrogen levels and whilst she has advised me that it would be ok I don’t want to undo the work that the hrt is doing. She didn’t know about the ashgawandga – it seems to be a bit of an enigma.

    • Hi Nicola, Our herbalist says “Although licorice is estrogenic in nature there is a recent study that still needs to be done on live animals not just tissues that suggests a compound in licorice called iso,” lowered the expression of key genes involved in hormone production, the researchers found. In particular, expression of a gene for aromatase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to estrogen, dropped by 50 percent or more. This was a high level of exposure to these tissues and the amount in the tablets for digestion is not a high level of exposure. Ashwsgandha helps to promote DHEA which helps make estrogen and testosterone so that is fine to take with hrt. If the licorice is really working, one can get blood work done on estrogen and see if it is effecting the levels.” ~HB Team

    I always start getting acne on my jaw and chin area a week before my period start. My cycle varies between 28-30 days. Don’t have heavy bleeding. I do get cramps occasionally. The acne subside after the cycle starts, but they do leave a mark that take months to go away. I am 41 and petite, if that helps. Am I estrogen dominant? Thank you so much.

I am awaiting surgery and will have the radiation treatment after but will also refuse the chemo and those brutal tablets. I would be really interested to know what sort of dietary regime you have in place and not sure if I can contact you privately through this but any ideas of how you’ve dealt with this would be fabulous.

          I was just going into Stage 2 and had a Lumpectomy 5 months ago, went through one day shy of seven weeks of radiation and also refused the chemo and pill. I made an agreement with my oncologist that I wanted to reduce my estrogen level naturally and he agreed for me to do so. He told me he has a few other patients who waned to forego the chemo abd pills but wouldn’t tell me how they’re doing it. That’s what prompted me to start searching for ways and it led me here. Can yoh share anything you’ve done.

  20. Thanks so much for this information I am so glad I found your website. Can you use nut butters for seed cycling like tahini and sun butter? Is there any reason the seeds need to be eaten whole? I just started and have been putting them in my shakes so wondering if I could do the butters to maybe save $$. I confirmed I have very low progesterone and ED with very low normal estrogen levels via blood test so I am starting here and going to get the ProgestPure as well. Thanks again!

    • Hi Amber, Seeds ground fresh in a dedicated coffee/spice grinder is what we recommend, you don’t have to eat them whole. Actually grinding them helps us optimize the nutrition of the seeds, and get everything we need from them. When we eat them whole, we often don’t chew them enough to get all the nutrients out of them. We prefer the freshly ground seeds vs. nut butter, again for optimal nutrients, controlling ingredients, and making sure we are not consuming rancid seeds & oils. We hope that helps! HB Support

  23. i fortunately stumble into your site: How to balance your hormones naturally, and I found it very inspiring and informative, I was diagnose with a high Estrogen level and is interested in getting it balance naturally. I was being advised by my Oncologist to take the hormone pills call Anastrozole, but I have research it found out it has various side effects, but that he suggest I take it so as not to let my cysts becomes cancerous due to an overload of estrogen.   27. Hi there, I’m 38 and suffering from very low blood flow during periods. Most often it is only for 2 days of flow. Upon diagnosis the doctors said I have a low level of estrogen. In addition to that I have genetic under active thyroid disorder. Does taking red ginseng root can help? Or is there any risks involved if I take it?   29. I’m seeking some advice on Flaxseeds. For context I have estrogren dominance (confirmed via tests and it’s off the top end of the scale). In addition I am 48 years old, have a Mirena coil and take the PoP. I take Sulfarophane and Calcium D Glucarate for Estrogen removal and a variety of supplements. DIM makes me feel very PMT so I don’t take it.

    I read that Flaxseeds are high Phytoestrogen and as such I stopped taking them. However much literature says that it’s ok to consume them even with estrogen dominance.
    Please can you advise? Are Flaxseeds ok for me to have? How much should I be having daily?

    Suffering from what I suspect is estrogen dominance , waiting on blood tests. Can you explain why you mention earlier saliva is best?

    I have sever hair loss – ever cycle extreme in the first 10 days…
    It’s horrible being inside my mind just now. There is no help from GPs. I am hitting dead ends everywhere.
    This has being going on for over a Year. I have one fibroid cyst appearing every month the week prior to period.
    I have swelling and pain in uterus.
    It all started after a severely stressful incident. I believe my cortisol has imbalanced my estrogen .. but is that affecting dht? . .

    • Hi Suzanne, we are sorry to hear you are going through this. We actually recommend DUTCH urine testing or saliva testing. Blood testing can often be inaccurate and not show you proper hormone levels and how your body is using and clearing your hormones. It is hard to know exactly why the hair loss, but there can be a host of reasons from low hormones, stress, heavy metal toxicity, mold toxicity, etc. We recommend seeing a practitioner to help you further.
